Share a photo from your phone

Sharing sends someone a copy you cannot fully control afterwards. Practise with a harmless photo containing no private paperwork or people who object to sharing.

Before you start

  • A photo saved on the phone
  • A familiar messaging or email app
  • Internet or messaging service as required
  • A known recipient

Step 1 of 5: Open the photo

Open Photos or your gallery and choose the picture. Check that it is the one you intend, including any private detail in the background. Begin with one image instead of a large selection.

Step 2 of 5: Choose a sharing route

General method: tap the Share symbol and choose your usual messaging or email app. WhatsApp alternative: open the person’s chat, tap the attachment or plus control and choose Photos or Gallery. Follow only one method.

Step 3 of 5: Confirm the recipient

Read the name, number or email address in the sending screen. Check whether you have opened an individual chat or a group. The sharing suggestions may include recent contacts you did not mean to choose.

Step 4 of 5: Preview and send

Make sure the photo appears in the draft or preview. Add a short explanation if helpful, then tap Send. WhatsApp may compress images; quality options and attachment controls vary. Large files can take longer or exceed a service’s limits.

Step 5 of 5: Confirm the result

Look for the sent message or ask the recipient whether it arrived. A spinning or pending symbol means you may need to wait or check your connection. Avoid sending repeated copies while the first is still uploading.

Try it for yourself

Your small practice task.

Send one harmless practice photo to a person who has agreed to receive it.

Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.

A common question.

Does sharing remove the original photo?

Ordinary sharing usually leaves the original on your phone. Deleting or moving files is a separate action.
