Make a one-to-one WhatsApp video call

Video calls use internet and need working camera and microphone access. Practise with a known person somewhere you are comfortable being seen and heard.

Before you start

  • WhatsApp set up on both phones
  • An internet connection
  • Permission for camera and microphone
  • A trusted contact ready to answer

Step 1 of 5: Arrange a practice call

Agree a suitable time through a message or another known contact method. Use home Wi-Fi if available and check your battery. Mobile-data costs and connection quality can affect a video call.

Step 2 of 5: Open the right conversation

Open WhatsApp Chats and choose the person. Read their name and check their number if there is any doubt. Calling from a group can involve more people, so start with an individual conversation.

Step 3 of 5: Start video deliberately

Tap the camera-shaped video-call control near the top of the chat. If asked, allow the camera and microphone only for the genuine app. Wait for the person to answer; the ordinary handset control starts a voice call instead.

Step 4 of 5: Check sound and picture

Look at your own preview and ask whether the other person can hear you. Microphone mute and camera-off controls stop different things. Use them when wanted; turning off video does not automatically mute the room’s sound.

Step 5 of 5: Finish and check

Tap the red hang-up control. Wait until the chat or call summary returns. If the picture freezes, check the connection or use voice-only by agreement rather than changing several settings during the conversation.

Try it for yourself

Your small practice task.

Make a short agreed call and practise muting, restoring sound and ending it.

Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.

A common question.

Can I use it for an emergency call?

Do not rely on an internet messaging app as your emergency calling route. Use the appropriate emergency service contact method for your location.
