Understand and set up a smart TV

A smart TV combines a television with internet-connected apps. It may also receive ordinary aerial channels. You do not have to use every smart feature, and owning the television does not include paid subscriptions to the apps shown on it.

Before you start

  • Have the TV remote, its model instructions and your Wi-Fi password.
  • Have account details only for services you intend to use.

Step 1 of 5: Choose your viewing route

Decide whether you want aerial channels, internet apps or both. Check the television’s supported apps and your existing equipment before buying additional boxes or subscriptions.

Step 2 of 5: Follow the initial setup

Select your language and region, then follow network prompts. Use home Wi-Fi or a supported Ethernet connection. Review optional data and advertising choices rather than accepting them without reading.

Step 3 of 5: Learn Home and Source

Home usually opens the app screen. Source or Input chooses equipment such as an aerial receiver or HDMI box. Practise returning to your preferred route using the remote.

Step 4 of 5: Open one useful app

Choose an app you already use and follow its genuine sign-in instructions. Check the current price before starting a paid plan. Use subtitles and audio settings where they help.

Step 5 of 5: Keep it manageable

Arrange favourite apps if supported and enable available updates. Keep a short note of how to return to ordinary TV. App support can change as older televisions stop receiving updates.

Try it for yourself

Your small practice task.

Open one app and then return to your usual television input.

Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.

A common question.

Do I need to replace a working TV to stream programmes?

Not necessarily. A compatible streaming device connected to an available HDMI input may add apps. Check required connections and service support first.
