Find your way around a Samsung phone

Your Home screen is the starting point for using your phone. This lesson is for an already configured Samsung Galaxy phone running One UI. Samsung's launcher, menu names and navigation controls can vary with software and personal settings. Practise one movement at a time.

Before you start

  • Unlock your phone and have a few quiet minutes to practise.
  • Use an installed app for this exercise; you do not need to download anything.

Step 1 of 6: Find Home

Look along the bottom edge. If you see navigation buttons, tap Home, usually the middle button. With side-and-bottom gestures, swipe upwards from the bottom edge. You should return to your Home screen.

Step 2 of 6: Look for your apps

Swipe upwards on an empty part of Home to open the Apps screen. Find Settings, which has a cog symbol. If your layout puts every app directly on Home, look through those pages instead.

Step 3 of 6: Open Settings

Tap Settings once and release your finger. A tap opens the app; holding an icon can show a different menu. Read the main settings list without changing an option.

Step 4 of 6: Try Back

Tap Display to enter a settings page. To leave it, tap the Back navigation button or swipe inwards from a side edge with side-and-bottom gestures. This returns to the preceding screen.

Step 5 of 6: Return Home

Use Home again. Notice that leaving Settings does not remove the app. Open it once more to build confidence that you can leave an app and find it again.

Step 6 of 6: Try Recent apps

Tap the Recent apps navigation button. With side-and-bottom gestures, swipe up from the bottom and pause briefly. Tap the Settings preview to return to it, then finish by returning Home.

Try it for yourself

Your small practice task.

Open Settings, visit Display, go Back, return Home and find Settings in Recent apps.

Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.

A common question.

Can I use buttons instead of gestures?

Usually, yes. Open Settings, Display, Navigation bar and select Buttons if offered. Older gesture styles and customised launchers can work differently; use your exact model's help if these instructions do not match.
