Read your first book on a Kindle

A Kindle e-reader displays electronic books on an e-ink screen. It is different from a Fire tablet and from the Kindle phone app. Downloaded books can usually be read offline, while obtaining or syncing books requires a suitable connection.

Before you start

  • Have the charged Kindle, compatible cable and an Amazon account.
  • Have Wi-Fi details and check the exact model’s setup instructions.

Step 1 of 5: Complete the initial setup

Turn the Kindle on and follow its language, Wi-Fi and account registration prompts. Use your own account and keep payment details private. Setup screens vary by model.

Step 2 of 5: Find a sample first

Open the Kindle Store from the reader and search for a familiar title. Read the purchase options carefully; choose a sample if offered to practise before buying.

Step 3 of 5: Download and open it

Find the title in Library and tap its cover. Allow the download to finish while connected. If you see only downloaded items, use the library filter to check the full collection.

Step 4 of 5: Adjust the reading view

Open the book’s reading controls and find the font or layout settings. Choose comfortable text size and spacing. Practise turning one page forward and then back.

Step 5 of 5: Return to your place

Leave the book and reopen it from Library to see how your reading position is retained. Before travelling, download the books you need and test opening one without Wi-Fi.

Try it for yourself

Your small practice task.

Download a sample, enlarge its text and return to your reading place.

Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.

A common question.

Does buying a Kindle include every book?

No. Books, library borrowing and subscription offers have separate rules. Check each title’s price and access terms; Prime or Kindle ownership does not include every title.
