Get started with an iPad

An iPad uses touch controls and an onscreen keyboard. This lesson starts after setup. If yours shows a welcome screen, complete the official setup prompts first. Buttons vary by model.

Before you start

  • Charge the iPad and have its passcode available.
  • For first-time setup, have Wi-Fi details and your own Apple Account information.

Step 1 of 6: Wake or start the iPad

Press the top button once to wake it. If it is switched off, hold the top button until the Apple logo appears. A welcome screen means setup is still needed.

Step 2 of 6: Unlock it

On models with a Home button, press Home; otherwise swipe up from the bottom. Follow Face ID, Touch ID or passcode prompts. Keep your passcode private.

Step 3 of 6: Make text comfortable

Open Settings, Accessibility, Display & Text Size, then Larger Text. Move the slider slightly and check the result. Not every app follows the same text-size setting.

Step 4 of 6: Find the Home Screen and Notes

Press Home or swipe up from the bottom to return to the Home Screen. Tap Notes. If it is not visible, search for Notes from the Home Screen.

Step 5 of 6: Write a practice note

Choose a notes folder, tap the new-note button and type ‘Practice note’ followed by a short sentence. Return to the notes list; Notes keeps the entry automatically.

Step 6 of 6: Find it again and lock

Reopen the note to confirm it is there. Press the top button once when finished. This locks the screen; it does not delete the note or switch the iPad off.

Try it for yourself

Your small practice task.

Write, close and reopen a short note, then lock the screen.

Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.

A common question.

Must I make phone calls for this lesson?

No. You only need the tablet’s touch controls and Notes. A cellular plan is unnecessary for this exercise.
