A clear way through this guide.
We’ll show you one step at a time. When you’re ready, press Done — next step. You can go back or take a break whenever you like.
5 steps · Your own pace
Use a Windows computer for the first time
Step 1 of 5: Start and sign in
Connect power and press the power button once. Wait for the sign-in screen. Use your own PIN, password or supported face or fingerprint sign-in. If it belongs to someone else, use only the access they provided.
✓ Step complete. You can practise it again.
Step 2 of 5: Look around the desktop
The main workspace appears after sign-in. Find the taskbar at the bottom and the Start button. Move the mouse to watch the pointer, or use the trackpad gently. A single click usually selects a control.
✓ Step complete. You can practise it again.
Step 3 of 5: Open one harmless app
Select Start, type Calculator and open the app result. Try a small calculation. The search may also show web results, so choose the installed app rather than a search advertisement.
✓ Step complete. You can practise it again.
Step 4 of 5: Practise closing and returning
Close Calculator using the cross on its window, then open it again through Start. If a different app asks to save changes, read the prompt before choosing. You can leave unfamiliar permission prompts unapproved.
✓ Step complete. You can practise it again.
Step 5 of 5: Finish the session
Save any work, close apps and choose Start > Power > Shut down. Wait for the computer to finish. Do not pull the plug or repeatedly press the power button while it is shutting down.
✓ Step complete. You can practise it again.
Take your time. Next marks this step done.
You’ve finished this guide.
Every step is complete. You can come back and practise again whenever you like.
Your small practice task.
Open Calculator, perform one calculation and close it.
Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.
A common question.
Must I remember every button?
No. Repeat one useful task and keep this checklist nearby. Familiarity builds through practice, and you can stop at any point.
