Get acquainted with an Amazon Fire tablet

A Fire tablet is a touchscreen device using Amazon’s Fire software. Its menus and app availability differ from an iPad or other Android tablet. Follow the instructions for your exact Fire model.

Before you start

  • A charged Fire tablet
  • Home Wi-Fi details
  • Your own Amazon account if setup requires it

Step 1 of 5: Check the model and charging

Find the model in device information or the purchase paperwork. Use the appropriate charger. Press the power button to start or wake it, then follow its setup screen. A previously configured tablet may instead ask for its lock code.

Step 2 of 5: Connect to home Wi-Fi

Swipe down from the top and open the Wi-Fi control or Settings. Choose your own network, enter its password and check the connection. Older Fire versions arrange the settings differently; use the tablet’s model-specific quick start guide.

Step 3 of 5: Complete account setup carefully

For registration, use your own Amazon account and the on-screen process. Check the account before purchases. Decide deliberately which content, payment and child-access settings suit a shared device.

Step 4 of 5: Practise the main controls

Find Home, volume and screen brightness. Open one built-in app, then return Home using the control shown. Use the device’s Appstore for compatible apps; do not assume an app available on another tablet exists for Fire.

Step 5 of 5: Find help and updates

Look in Settings for Device Options and System Updates where available. Read the model’s quick start/help pages for features such as storage or parental controls. Optional services and content may need accounts, subscriptions or separate purchases.

Try it for yourself

Your small practice task.

Open a built-in app, return Home and locate the tablet’s model information.

Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.

A common question.

Can I follow any Android guide?

Some touch actions are similar, but Fire menus, services and app stores can differ. Use Fire-specific instructions when a setting does not match.
