5 steps · Your own pace
Choose YouTube controls for a child
Step 1 of 5: Choose the viewing experience
Decide between a YouTube Kids profile and an available supervised experience. Check the official help for what each permits; ordinary unrestricted YouTube is a different environment.
✓ Step complete. You can practise it again.
Step 2 of 5: Open the parental settings
In YouTube Kids, open Settings, complete the parent check and select the child’s profile. Enter the parent password when asked. Keep the parent controls secured.
✓ Step complete. You can practise it again.
Step 3 of 5: Select how content is chosen
Use Edit Settings to select the appropriate content setting. Where available, Approve content yourself lets you choose videos, channels or collections and removes the child’s search option.
✓ Step complete. You can practise it again.
Step 4 of 5: Review extra controls
Check search, autoplay and viewing-time options supported by your setup. Turning off search alone does not guarantee appropriate content. Preview the child’s experience rather than relying on setting names.
✓ Step complete. You can practise it again.
Step 5 of 5: Watch and adjust together
Try a short viewing session. Show the child how to stop and tell an adult. Block or report unwanted videos and review settings as their interests and account arrangements change.
✓ Step complete. You can practise it again.
Take your time. Next marks this step done.

Your small practice task.
Preview the child’s profile and approve a small selection together.
Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.
A common question.
Can YouTube Kids show something I would not choose?
Yes. Google says its filters are not perfect. Parent-selected content and ongoing supervision help, but still review the experience and respond to concerns.
