Choosing & helping

Choose a laptop for everyday use

The right laptop should make your usual tasks comfortable: email, documents, video calls or photos. A higher price does not automatically make a computer easier to use. Compare a short list against your needs instead of starting with a ranking.

Before you start

  • Write down your three main tasks and a total budget.
  • List any existing printer, apps or accessories you want to keep using.

Step 1 of 5: Choose familiar software

Consider whether you already know Windows, macOS or ChromeOS. Check that your required apps and printer work with the specific operating system; browser-based alternatives may not cover every task.

Step 2 of 5: Try the screen and keyboard

If possible, type a short sentence in a shop, enlarge the text and open a webpage. Check glare, key labels and whether the touchpad feels manageable.

Step 3 of 5: Check practical connections

Look for the ports your devices need, a usable webcam and a charger you can handle. Check the weight including the charger if you will carry it regularly.

Step 4 of 5: Compare the full cost

Include any paid software, adapters, setup help and warranty. Ask how long the model receives security updates, especially when considering refurbished equipment.

Step 5 of 5: Read the return and support arrangements

Save the exact model details and seller’s written terms. Choose a route to help you can actually use: telephone, local shop or a trusted family member.

Your small practice task.

Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.

A common question.

Should I choose a touchscreen?

Only if it helps you. Try tapping and typing first. Text enlargement, voice tools and an ordinary mouse can improve comfort without a touchscreen.
