Check a tablet that feels slow

A slow webpage is different from a slow touchscreen. Make one small check at a time and repeat the same task afterwards. Older devices may have limits that a setting change cannot remove.

Before you start

  • A charged tablet
  • An example of the slow task
  • Important work saved before a restart

Step 1 of 5: Compare online and offline tasks

Try a simple built-in app such as Clock, then a new webpage. If only online tasks lag, check the Wi-Fi connection and another device on that network. Do not assume an internet problem means the tablet needs replacing.

Step 2 of 5: Restart normally

Save work, then use the tablet’s normal power menu to restart or switch off and on. Button combinations vary between iPad and Android models. Use the manufacturer’s instructions if the screen is unresponsive instead of trying random long button presses.

Step 3 of 5: Check available storage

iPad: Settings, General, iPad Storage. Android: search Settings for Storage. If little space remains, review replaceable downloads or unused apps. Protect important files first; deleting unfamiliar data can make recovery harder.

Step 4 of 5: Check the affected app

Update an app that repeatedly stalls. Close only an unresponsive app and reopen it. If one app remains slow while others work normally, consult that app’s support before reinstalling or clearing its data.

Step 5 of 5: Review device conditions

Check supported updates and let an overheated tablet cool. Battery-saving settings can limit performance. If problems persist, record the model and checks for the manufacturer. Leave factory resets until backup and recovery are understood.

Try it for yourself

Your small practice task.

Compare opening Clock with loading a fresh webpage and note which action is slow.

Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.

A common question.

Should I install a speed booster?

Start with built-in checks. A cleaner or booster is not a guaranteed repair and may ask for access you do not need to grant.
