Build a safer browsing routine

A browser opens websites and may also handle passwords, downloads and permissions. Its protections help but cannot recognise every dishonest page. A few regular habits make it easier to notice unexpected requests and use the genuine services you intended to visit.

Before you start

  • Use an installed browser from a genuine app store or manufacturer.
  • Have time to complete any update and restart it requires.

Step 1 of 5: Keep the browser current

Check its official update instructions or app-store updates. Install available updates and restart when requested. Older unsupported software may not receive current security fixes.

Step 2 of 5: Inspect the address

Before signing in or paying, check the website address rather than just its logo. Use a saved trusted bookmark for important services and be careful with sponsored search results.

Step 3 of 5: Take warnings seriously

If your browser displays an unsafe-site or insecure-connection warning, stop and check the genuine address. Do not bypass the warning to claim a prize or complete an unexpected payment.

Step 4 of 5: Limit permissions and downloads

Only allow camera, microphone or notifications when needed for a task you chose. Download software from its genuine publisher or official store. Decline surprise update prompts inside unrelated webpages.

Step 5 of 5: Finish sensitive tasks carefully

Sign out on shared devices, close private account pages and avoid saving credentials where others have access. Review browser permissions if an unwanted site keeps sending notifications.

Try it for yourself

Your small practice task.

Review one browser’s website-notification permissions and remove anything unwanted.

Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.

A common question.

Does private or incognito mode make every website safe?

No. Private browsing mainly changes what the browser retains locally. It does not make a seller honest or remove the need to check links and permissions.
