Get started with an Android tablet

Menus vary between Android tablet makers. This exercise uses Google Keep on a tablet with Google Play. Without Google services, follow your manufacturer’s supported notes-app instructions.

Before you start

  • Charge the tablet and have its unlock code available.
  • For a new tablet, have Wi-Fi and your account details ready.

Step 1 of 6: Wake and unlock

Press the power button briefly, then follow the screen’s unlock prompt. If a welcome screen appears, complete your manufacturer’s language, Wi-Fi and account setup before continuing; Pixel’s official setup is one example.

Step 2 of 6: Adjust the text

Open Settings and search for Font size or Display size. Increase one slider slightly, then check a familiar screen. Some apps use their own text-size controls.

Step 3 of 6: Find your way home

Tap the Home navigation button, or swipe up from the bottom if gesture navigation is enabled. Open the app list as your tablet instructs, usually by swiping up on Home.

Step 4 of 6: Open a notes app

Open Google Keep. If needed, install the official Google Keep app from Google Play and sign in to your own account. Do not install similarly named apps from unknown websites.

Step 5 of 6: Type and keep a note

Tap Create and choose Text if requested. Type ‘Practice note’ as the title and a short sentence below. Tap Back to return to the list and keep the entry.

Step 6 of 6: Check and finish

Open your note again to confirm it remains available. Return Home and press the power button briefly to lock the screen. Google Keep may sync your note with your account when connected.

Try it for yourself

Your small practice task.

Create a harmless practice note, reopen it and lock the tablet.

Completing the guide records your progress here; it does not check your device settings.

A common question.

Why do my menus look different?

Manufacturers customise Android. Use Settings search and your exact model’s official help when a button or menu differs.
